5 Ways to Avoid Burnout

We have all been there … stressing about work, putting in the extra hours, living monotonously in a routine of work, eat, sleep — repeat.

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress and overwork. It can affect anyone, but it’s particularly common among entrepreneurs and business owners. The constant demands of running a business can make it difficult to find time for self-care, leading you to become stressed out and overwhelmed.

There are several ways to avoid burnout and maintain your mental and physical well-being.

I would be lying if I told you I have never felt a sense of burnout…heck that’s one of the reasons I decided to change my career and become a VA.

Allow me to let you in on some tips and tricks to avoid burnout:

  • Take time for yourself
    • In whatever way that looks like for you! Maybe this means waking up 30 minutes earlier to be intentional with your time, getting out of the house for a workout, getting out on the weekdays to meet for dinner with friends, take a walk, eat outside, take a midday bath…. or go for a drive and grab a coffee (a personal fav)
  • Turning your phone off/putting it on do not disturb
    • When you are taking time for yourself, turn off the distractions! I recently have created multiple “focus modes” on my phone like no social media, silencing notifications from clients out of hours, etc!
  • Scheduling out your week
    • Going into the week with a clear plan for each day can help you to not only stay organized, but stay focused on the tasks that need to be completed and not stress about the tasks you have allotted other time for. I highly recommend sitting down on the Friday or Sunday before and map out the week in advance. Take a look at the most important things that need to get done for the week ahead and even pre map out dinners/groceries that you need to get.
  • Set clear boundaries
    • With yourself and with others. Communicate your availability! If you’re anything like me.. sometimes other people respect your boundaries, better than you respect your own. Stick to your boundaries.. they’re there to keep you sane and not burned out.
  • Incorporate breaks throughout your day
    • Find a vacation in everyday … schedule out time to make sure you are taking mental breaks — this could be taking your dog out for a walk, stopping to make a nutritious lunch, getting an at home workout in, going for a drive with the windows down to grab your favorite drink, etc.

I hope these tips were helpful tools to get you back on track. As a CEO it’s especially helpful to ensure you’re following good boundaries and taking care of yourself as its easy to over work and that quickly leads to burnout. This week, remember to take a step back and take time for yourself, you deserve it!
